Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner Review

In this review, we’ll find out how well Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner works and whether you should opt for it over other brands.

What are the benefits of using Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel system Cleaner?

The claimed benefits of Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus are:

  • Total fuel system cleansing, working on the entire fuel system, from the tank to the injectors, fuel lines to the combustion chambers
  • Optimizes power, throttle response & fuel efficiency
  • Reduces of rough idling, surging, lag or hesitation of the engine
  • Improves cold start performance
  • Stabilizes fuel for storage
  • Concentrate Plus makes the claim that will work in just one treatment, which is unusual compared with other products

The above benefits are generally shared with all fuel system cleaners, as these are the goals of using such a product. The only standout thing to note is Chevron claim that Concentrate Plus will work after just one treatment.

Why is Techron Fuel System Cleaner unique?

Of all the products we’ve looked at, this one is perhaps the only one to claim it will work after just one treatment. Most other companies say their fuel system cleaners are to be used as a preventive measure.

Also, Chevron’s chemical formulation is perhaps the most complicated with several components. Other products, like Lucas Oil Fuel System Cleaner, has only two components.

Unlike other fuel system cleaners, Techron Concentrate Plus publish the results of their extended testing on real-world cars. They used a selection of 3+ year old gasoline powered cars which experienced an average fuel economy increase of 8.7%.

Diesel cars of similar ages were tested too, the results demonstrated a 7.6% fuel usage improvement. Both gasoline and diesel powered vehicles emitted lower levels of CO2 and a marked improvement of peak power.

What is Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner made of?

The largest single ingredient is a hydrotreated light distillate ICP solvent. This is used instead of chemicals like Kerosene or Xylene as used in other fuel system detergents.

The solvents are designed to help soften up carbon build-ups, releasing them to burn during the combustion process. There are several trade secret products, that are also present in products like Gum Out. They are not specifically listed or known.

Interestingly, no mention is made of Polyetheramine (PEA) which is the most effective carbon dissolving solution.

How well does Concentrate Plus Work?

This YouTube user tested Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner against other products. He used a borescope to examine the before and after of each product.

Examining the before and after images of each piston head, the results were mixed. On the whole, the product didn’t seem particularly effective. The videomaker suggested instead of trying another product like Gum Out or similar.
How long does a treatment last?

The manufacturers each treatment will last 6,000 – 10,000 miles (and it should not be used more than twice per oil change) or one oil change. It’s pretty annoying to use Concentrate Plus fuel system cleaner. Some rivals have a very simple pour into your tank and go treatment process, but with the Concentrate Plus, you have to put the required dosage into your near empty fuel tank, an extra inconvenience.

Does Techron Concentrate Plus work?

It definitely does. Just not as effective as it suggests and not as well as other brands it’s competing with.

The tests we’ve found online all followed the recommended dosage, with one single application, which is apparently sufficient to clean out carbon deposits. And almost all of the reviews found that it worked only minimally, removing around 1/3rd of deposits initially.

That said, almost all the reviews used the product on quite heavily coked up engines, which had received no prior cleaning, thus allowing the deposits to become very stubborn and well established.

Do you recommend Techron Concentrate Plus?

No. It is not the cheapest product, in fact, it’s far more expensive than rivals like Sea Foam. The reviews we’ve seen do not show enough of a difference for us.

People reviews for this product generally say that it did nothing for their engine performance and in some cases, it caused fuel economy to worsen. Because you cannot use the product again until the next oil change like some its rivals, you are just not getting the most aggressive clean of internal components.

Chevron are a well-respected brand, producing diesel and gasoline fuels and so they know the proper formulation of fuels. They are also very well established, so there’s an argument that you can trust their fuel system cleaner to be entirely safe for use.

It’s more expensive, more of a hassle to use and the results are less than impressive. We would suggest you only use Concentrate Plus if that’s all you can find, or you get a really good deal on it. Certainly not the most effective fuel system servicing treatment out there.
